Garden Collective

Garden Forum

The Brickhouse Garden Collective would like to start meeting up again at least twice a month starting in March. Please post to our forum with a day and time that would be best for us to do so. Thanks, --Christina

Gardening is good in so many ways: It puts us closer to nature, it creates beauty out of water and sunlight, and it helps us be more self-sufficient. Let's take advantage of this nature giving beauty and make this year a great year for urban community gardens.

Urban Gardeners Unite

Unite

I have really been trying to put my all in getting the garden collective together and united in the efforts that we would want to make at the BrickHouse and the many community gardens around the city(at least the ones that we are aware of).

We are still meeting and arranging fundrasing efforts to help with equipment, tools, etc.. along with helping pay a bill or two at the BrickHouse.

I would really like to start seeing a better turn out at meetings. And just to clarify what meetings are all about is making small easy decisions as a collective and the rest of the time actually doing some gardening. It would not be filled with just sitting and talking, there are a lot of things to do at the BrickHouse alone, not to mention what other sites might need and how we can help.

So, you gardeners out there, let's unite and help each other acheive the goals for the many beautiful sites that we all have been blessed with to work and give back to Mother Earth.

Thanks for listening and I look forward to seeing... (read and comment)

!!!PUBLIC CITIZEN ALERT!!! Administration Seeks to Censure Public Review of Exploitation of Natural Resources in Forest Service Lands

Supreme Court to Decide Whether Citizens Can Effectively Challenge Illegal Government Rules

September 29, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Supreme Court is set to decide whether the public can effectively challenge illegal government regulations and, in the process, will decide whether citizens have a voice in the management of national forests. Administration Seeks to Shield Logging, Drilling and Off-Road Vehicle Use on Forest Service Lands from Public Review

On Oct. 8, the high court will hear a case that started out as an important challenge to the Bush administration’s weakening of the public’s right to weigh in on major decisions impacting our national forests. The case began when conservation groups successfully challenged federal regulations issued in 2003 that eliminated the public’s ability to comment on and appeal U.S. Forest Service actions such as commercial timber sales, oil and gas development and off-road motorized vehicle use. The victory has been upheld on appeal and the administration’s request for a rehearing was denied.

However, the U.S. Supreme Court granted... (read and comment)

Dandelion - Crop or Pest?

http://www.selfsufficientish.com/index.php/general-tips/31-general/161-dandelion-crop-or-pest-by-dave-hamilton

Written by Dave Hamilton Sunday, 06 July 2008 18:12

Dandelions are traditionally a well-know bane of most gardeners, their deep roots make them a tough weed to eliminate from any plot.   To ensure they do not return the entire root must be taken out. This is perhaps best done in the autumn if they are to be used, as this is when the plant will begin to store it's nutrients ready for its growth in spring.   The name dandelion comes from the French dent de lion or lions tooth which refers to the jagged or tooth like shape of the leaves. Herbalists have used it for centuries and if seen as a crop rather than a pest can become enjoyable or at least a little less frustrating to dig up.   Culpeper, the 17 th century herbalist writes of its medical properties, 'It has an opening and cleansing property and, therefore, very effectual for removing obstructions of the liver, gall bladder and spleen and diseases arising from them such as jaundice'.   Indeed modern herbalists ...
